Ivanovo Rock Churches

     Ivanovo Rock Churches are the greatest mediaeval monastery complex on Bulgarian lands, which is situated in Northeast Bulgaria. The beautiful nature and the calmness were an excellent precondition for the establishment of a community of monks-isichasts in 11th–14th c. AD. The Rock Churches have been included in the world cultural heritage list of UNESCO in 1979.

     Address: 7088 Ivanovo village, Ruse region

     Exhibition: The complex is situated 21 km southwest from Ruse, not far from Ivanovo village. The complex represents mediaeval churches, chapels and monk cells dating from XII - XIV c. AD, hewn into the craggy gorge of the Rusenski Lom River. The churches were inhabited by monks-isichasts. Christian wall paintings from this time are carefully preserved and restored. On the same spot there was a literary centre strongly connected with the royal capital Veliko Tarnovo. The Churches have been included in the world cultural heritage list of UNESCO in 1979. The complex has been renovated in 2004 with the financial support of EU, program PHARE.
