Boyana Church

     Boyana Church is one of the most famous Mediaeval Bulgarian churches. The painted images are among the first realistic portraits in the Middle Ages in Europe. They precede the earliest Renaissance works of art in the continent and are evidences of the high development of culture on the Bulgarian lands.

     Exhibition: Boyana Church is one of the fully preserved Mediaeval monuments on our lands. It has three building stages: the first stage is from the end of the 10th until the beginning of the 11th century, the second one – the middle of the 13th century, and the third one - the 19th century. The church was painted by an unknown Boyana master and some of the wall–paintings date from 1259. They have extremely high artistic qualities, with great contribution to the European Culture. The Bulgarian King Konstantin Asen (1257-1277) and Queen Irina as well as a nobleman, Kaloyan, and his wife, Desislava, are portrayed on the northern wall of the church. The church contains of 240 images, which reflect the extraordinary achievements of Bulgarian Mediaeval Culture.

     Services: Exhibitions in special exhibition halls, guided tours in Bulgarian, English, German, French, Russian and Polish, a documentary showing the history, architecture and wall-paintings of Boyana Church and their restoration as well as lectures, concerts, presentations.

     The time for visiting and the number of tourists should be specified 2 days before the visit. Groups of maximum 6 visitors can visit the church at the same time, for a 10-minute stay.
