Biking
Bulgaria is a beautiful country and the best way to see its nature is to go biking. There are some classic tours: Biking Strandzha, Biking Balkan, Biking Rhodope Mountain, Biking Vitosha Mountain, and Biking at the Black Sea Coast.

Dangerous places in Bulgaria for biking are: the big roads - especially in summer the traffic is dangerous. The north and north-east areas of Bulgaria are not recommended for biking - there are no forests and mountains, mostly towns and villages. Another area to be avoided is the Thracian valley (around Plovdiv and Stara Zagora) - and eastwards to the Black Sea - mostly industrial and agricultural area, no forests. A third dangerous area is the Black Sea coast. During the summer the traffic is very intensive and there are parts of the main road (entrance and exit of Varna and Bourgas, the mountain road between Obzor and Slanchev Briag and the section between Sozopol and Primorsko) that can not be bypassed through parallel secondary roads. Have a look at our Black Sea Coast tour for a reference where to pass from.

In case you intend to cross Bulgaria from Ruse (or any other checkpoint at the Romanian border in the north-east Bulgaria) down south to Istanbul you will have to cycle through both 'not recommended for biking' areas - the north-east Bulgaria and/or the Black Sea Coast.

Biking tours are a great adventure that stimulate the mind and keep the body well fit. They allow a comfortable time margin for tours and stops as well as wonderful surroundings to enjoy and take pictures.

There are different options for organizing a biking tour in Bulgaria. The guide may either ride a bike or drive a support vehicle which carries the luggage, spare bikes, parts and tools. As the purpose of the guide, the support vehicle function is to accompany the group. Bikers can be provided with clearly written route descriptions as well as detailed maps, and information about the sights along the way.

There are also possibilities for short guided tours at various points of interest. All that clients need is to take care of the necessary clothing, rain-coat, personal items and equipment, as well as a small backpack for the personal belongings.

Individual private tours are organized by specialized agencies for those who seek mobility and privacy and wish to enjoy the individual experience, but who would also like to share their experience with other enthusiasts. For bikers that like to travel on their own, only some additional support can be provided, such as proposed itinerary options, maps, bike rental, and food and accommodation arrangements.

Bycicle rental prices depend on the number of days the bycicle is rented; package prices for longer periods are lower. The daily rental rate can vary from 5 to 15 Euro, depending on the period. Security deposits mostly depend on the type of bycicle. They normally vary between 50 and 150 Euro. The security deposit is refundable.

Mountain-biking is comparatively slowly catching on in Bulgaria, especially in Pirin, Rhodopes and Stara Planina mountains, where you can rent bikes from hotels in Bansko and Pamporovo or tourist offices. From a climatic standpoint, mid-June to late September is the ideal time for biking in the Pirin, while in the Rhodopes it’s feasible until mid-October. Though there are plenty of dirt roads and tracks, the challenge is to find a locality with a mixture of mountainous, undulating and flat terrain, where you can get above the tree-line for a panoramic view – such as the area between Pamporovo and Trigrad. Trails are still less developed in the Stara Planina, but there are several places in the region where you can rent at a very low price.
