Tsarevets Hill

Exhibition: Architectural remains from the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1187-1393) – fortress walls, Royal Palace, Patriarchal Complex, Balduin’s Tower, economic and residential buildings, 22 churches, 4 monastery complexes. This magnificent complex is the most representative example of the Bulgarian Mediaeval Culture and Architecture. Its strategic location and administrative, political and cultural functions are the reason Tsarevets to be known as "The Third Rome" i.e. it resembled the two greatest cities of the Antiquity - Rome and Constantinople. The meaning of this historical monument was strengthened by the fact that this place was chosen for an announcement of the Bulgarian Independence from the Ottoman empire in 1908.
