Osogovo

There are many legends about the origin of name Osogovo, but the most famous one is that it was given by the Saxon miners who were mining gold and silver in the region in the past. According to this legend, the name originates from the Old Germanic words "osso" (god) and "gov" (place) which means "a divine place".

Osogovo is a mountain and ski resort between southwestern Bulgaria and northeastern Republic of Macedonia. It is about 110 km long and 50 km wide, the highest peak is Ruen at 2251 m. The mountain is a powerful granite massif of crystal rocks. It has a prominent volcanic relief made of conic peaks and volcanic tuff.

From the picturesque town of Kyustendil, one of the ancient roman centres over the lands of Bulgaria, mountain roads wind up to the chalets of "Osogovo" and "The three oaks". There you have wonderful conditions for hiking during the summer months and for skiing during the long winter. From the skiing tracks by Osogovo hut to the highest peak of the mountain – Ruen, there is a several-hour hike over easy terrain with magnificent panoramic views towards Rila and Pirin.
