Koprivshtitsa

The town of Koprivshtitsa is sheltered in the folds of Sredna Gora Mountain at an altitude of 1060 m, on the banks of Topolnitsa River. One of the unique Bulgarian towns, having preserved the original architectural heritage from the Bulgarian National Revival period. Emerging in the late 14th century, thanks to the natural factors the town developed as a stockbreeding and trade center. Koprivshtitsa’s enterprising merchants traveled to Constantinople, Bursa, Alexandria, and Cairo and even as far as Addis Abeba. The town experienced its heyday in the first half of the 19th century when goods from Koprivshtitsa were busily traded – over 250 000 pairs of stockings a year, as well as culinary specialties such as "lukanka" and "pastarma".

The town’s appearance dates from that period. High walls and iron-studded gates hide fine decorated buildings. The single-story Pavlikyanska and Vakarelska houses, which date from an earlier period, are made of wood and contain only two rooms and the farm premises. The town’s later two-story houses are genuine masterpieces of architecture – imposing and strikingly beautiful with bay windows and terraces, numerous windows and richly painted facades. Two new rooms were added – guest parlor and roofed veranda on the second floor. The appearance of the rooms also changed. They almost doubled in size and the walls were painted with exquisite drawings in harmony with the carved ceilings and cupboards, with the brightly colored rugs and cushions on the window seats. The houses of the writer Lyuben Karavelov and the revolutionary Georgi Benkovski, as well as the Oslekov, Mluchkov, Lyutov and Kantardjiev houses, are fine examples of Koprivshtitsa architecture.
Many Bulgarian National Revival figures and revolutionaries, fighters for independence, grew up in this romantic atmosphere. The April Uprising was proclaimed here on 20 April 1876.
The town is a spiritual treasure-trove of Bulgarian lifestyle, culture and history. Koprivshtitsa may be difficult to pronounce, but is not easily forgotten!
