The National Competition for Popular Music "Bourgas and the Sea" is organized for the first time in 1973. Its name was "Songs for Bourgas, the sea and its working people". After 13 years, it seized its existence. In 1996 it was restored under the caption "Bourgas and the Sea" and since then takes part every June. This competition gave the starting point to many Bulgarian composers, lyrics authors and singers. It has also created emblematic Bulgarian popular songs, many of them popular tunes.
