The Gold of Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis

The brothers Todor and Nikola Tsvetanovi discovered the treasure on 28 December 1924 while working in their vineyard in the village of Vulchitrun, Pleven region. The treasure consists of 13 golden vessels – cup with 1 handle (kantharos), cups with 1 handle (kiathoi) and discs. The strangest vessel consisted of the smaller vessels of leaf-like form connected with a small tube and having a single handle. Most scholars thought that this treasure was a set of sacred vessels used in special ritual feasts. They were related with nature and primarily with Sun – so called Sun cult. The treasure was produced in the Carpathian – Balkan region about the end of the 14th century BC.

The Vulchitrun treasure was not only one of the oldest and the largest in Europe. It is also of high artistic value and its decorations are the product of all working techniques known in the antiquity: casting, hammering, beating out with embossed ornaments. The treasure is one of the most valuable ones in the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia.
